Day of the Dead Girl by BlackHawk45LC Day of the Dead Girl by BlackHawk45LC
Artwork is by me, and is property of the company it was created for. Note to my project comment folks: I know watermarks suck, but I kinda had to on this.

Well done; the colors and shading look excellent, and the pink hair contrasts nicely with the skeleton face without looking garish. I actually think the flower in the hair is a bit unnecessary, but it doesn't detract from the piece. I do, however, think it should have been a color other than orange, as I do not believe that that color goes well with the pink/white color scheme of the woman herself. Perhaps a blue flower to match her eyes?

Either way, it's a great picture, that slight quibble aside.

Thanks so much for your observations. I will take them to heart. This was specifically created for a specific market in Mexico. The Mexican hibiscus is orange/red. I chose the colors to make it stand out against the rest of the composition. I think you make valid points that maybe I over did it. Thanks so much!

Hi! I found your work on the :iconprojectcomment:

First of all - this work is a good piece of art! I think the best part, when speaking of technique, is the way you work with colors. I really love this vivid pink and cyan, contrasting with the black background. The violet hues where they blend and the shaded part around the girl's neck look great, you use several hues and the colors look rich here.
You have shown face anatomy and volumes rather well too. In this case - with the face-paint - it must have been harder to do, than on a simple portrait, but you managed fine. The painted lines curve naturally in most parts, and I especially love the shape of her lips (very tempting :) ) and jawline, you've shown the shape very well. The lips' shaded part blending with the shade on her cheecks, while the light parts have all the white highlights and details - that's beautiful!

And as well as technique, I love the whole look of it - the death mask painted on her face, these radiant colors and the girls light, almost shining eyes, fixed on the watcher. It all gives a certain edge to the picture, it's both beautiful and slightly pulling on your nerves, if that was the point of the picture - than you managed greatly!

Now, to speak of the things that could be improved...
First of all, I think that the flower's color stands out too much. It's as bright as the main two colors, but doesn't fall in line with them... Maybe, if it were dark, or less saturated, it would look better. Or, at least, if tha flower and the hair would put some tint on each other - right now it just doean't look like it's really there. It's more like a sticker on a photo than an element inside of it...
And also, I noticed that you manage greatly in the middle tones, but I think that highlights (on top of her hair) look rather dull in comparison. Maybe you could add some subtle hues to the light too - now it's either white or pink (very close to the main pink color). The shadows are cold, as I see, so naturally it's suggested that the highlights should be warmer, than the main color, but that can be different in this case, with radiant, almost unnatural colors. But anyway, the highlights, that are not just white or lighter shade of main color, would give it a richer look, complementing the mid-tones.
And I think, that the back of her head cannot be highlighted all around. Now the top of her head looks kinda flat, maybe shading the back bart would make it better... You could go figuring it out by defining the light source, or maybe in this case (bright face, black background) just shading the back of her head a bit (making it close to the background)  would give it a more 3-dimensional look. Imagine her head as a round object, like a ball, and try to push out the closest part, making it the lightest, and make the backside (far from the watcher) darker, and it might look even better than it does now!

Well, I hope you don't mind all the advice, because it doesn't mean it's not a great work - it is! But I hope that some of these points can be helpful for you someday, and help you do an even greater job!

Dia de los muertos. Love it. The shading is on, the coloring is on, there's a lot of attention to detail. It's al around amazing, but what it really needs is more attention to the flower, it, to me, looks like it's not a part of the picture and more of an object outside of it. I give it an 8/10.

Thanks for your comment and kind words. The flower is intentionally rough as I didn't want it's contrasting colors to draw attention away from the focal point by pushing a lot of detail into it. Seems though that maybe it draws attention away in a different way. Again thanks so much!
